This is Jesse Winchester’s first studio recording in ten years, and as per usual it is filled with songs that are beautifully crafted crystals of the moments that make a life the joy to reflect on, including the moments of living that hurt so bad. This artist, who has thru his years of recording has given us so many unforgettable songs; “Yankee Lady,” Brand New Tennessee Waltz,” “Rumba Girl,” that have been hits for either himself or other artists is back with this new gift of 9 new songs, and 3 well done covers. His songs have always been that hodgepodge, gumbo, or fusion of styles that we now call Americana, however we had no name for it back I 1970 when his first album was released with the help of Robbie Robertson. The wonderful thing here is that Mr. Winchester displays he is still, after all these years, showing the same sense of the poignancy of the moment that is captured is still ripe within his songs imbuing them with a meaning that other songwriters can only wish for. Listen to the opening cut, “O What A Thrill,” for what love feels like to a man past the age of ‘rock’em and
sock’em’ and move on to the next; there is the adventure and delight in meeting someone new that perks that romantic interest. And just in case you think he is not thinking about his romantic interest in a romantic situation, and the toll that age does take go to “Wear Me Out,” for the joys and thoughts of a considerate lover. His heart felt rendering of Ben E. King’s classic “Stand By Me,” can bring tears of joy and sorrow to the eyes.
The band assembled here offers some fine support and fully understands their position to support and enhance and that they do with both taste and feel. A disc that seems to grow into the listener with each listening.
