These recordings were made done in various locations and the earliest one was done 1902, and the last one was in 1954. There are a variety of styles but it is largely music out of the black churches. Most of the recording artists are largely unknown now but there are a few whose names have would still be recognized including one cut each by Marian Anderson, Paul Robeson, and the Golden Gate Jubilee Quartet. Each of these cuts is outstanding though the one by Marian Anderson is one of the few where the background noise is, almost to a distraction, not well cleaned up. These recordings were made in the early years where background noise was accepted; they have been, for the most part, nicely cleaned up with a lot of the background noise and pop from the original recordings removed. There are some real gems here, for instance, “Gabriel” by Elder Charles Beck & His Congregation, and a beautiful version of “Honey In The Rock” by Blind Mamie Forehand, which has some fantastic guitar accompaniment by Mr. A. C. Forehand. Then there is the stunning riveting voice of MME. Ernestione Washington and the Milleraires on 2 cuts: “Holing On Part 1” and “Holding On Part 2.” All throughout this collection are gems just waiting to be discovered.
