This North Carolina born, and now Austin, Texas based, singer and guitar player has come up with a solid blues based first disc that is going to cause some stirring in the streets. The songs presented here are all blues based and he wrote or co-wrote 7 of the 11 compositions that run from straight ahead Texas boogie blues to R&B to swing with various other stops in-between, though none feel out of place on this cohesive disc. He does a stunning rendition of the Tom Waits song “Picture In A Frame”, which he uses to close the disc that is just achingly beautiful.
The three piece band behind him; Lindsay Greene on acoustic and electric bass, as well as harmony vocals, Stefano Intelisano piano, B3 Organ, and Wurlitzer electric piano, and Mark Hays on drums, is solid and tight and plays in the acoustic and electric veins equally well; there is a judicious
use of some of his Austin cohorts and peers on the disc that add and never overshadow the song.Folks such as Kim Wilson on harmonica for a cut, Floyd Domino on piano for 2 cuts, Mike Keller adds guitar on a cut, Ephraim Owens adds trumpet for a tune, and Rayvon Foster adds backing vocals on 2 cuts. This is player who seems to have a good future as his songs are solid pieces of work that hold together well and as evidenced by the interpretation of Waits’ song can take other people’s work and do it well.
