This singer/songwriter’s latest release is loaded with 12 incisive new songs written by this artist for our pleasure and enlightenment. As well as his usual solid and insightful lyrics, which are slanted toward an adult mind, there are 2 veteran producers who have worked with similar artists; Kevin McKendree (Delbert McClinton), Stewart Lerman (Jules Shear and Marshall Crenshaw. The third producer is Greg - and who better than the singer/songwriter himself to have a clear hand in the production of his work. For those of you unfamiliar with Greg Trooper’s prior work, if you had to give comparisons you might say he has the passion of Otis Redding; combined with the candid frankness of Hank Williams along with his touch of his country twang; and the wordplay, replete with the devious mischievousness of a Bob Dylan. His musical touch points form an extreme scalene triangle, with angles forming at the cities of Nashville (country), Memphis (soul), and New York City (folk).
Mr. Trooper has a number of outstanding musicians helping him to put some meat on the skeleton of his songs. Kevin McKendree contributes Wurlitzer Electric Piano, Hammond B3, Bass; Acoustic Piano, and Electric Guitar; Kenneth Blevins Drums; Dave Jacques; Bass; Jack Trooper, Greg’s son Drums on 3 cuts; to name of few of the contributors who help with this expansion. This is arguably Greg Trooper’s best and most polished disc, and even though polished it doesn’t lose any of the grit that he writes with. He is an artist whose songs and the delivery of them deserves far more recognition then he is getting now.
