I don’t think there has been a more appropriate title for a disc, or maybe for the life story of this southern singer/songwriter with grit embedded in his deep southern voice.  If you are someone who loves an interesting and original story here is one that will capture you.  His father was a Pentecostal preacher, and his uncle a pimp, he was influenced by the two of them and it shows, in his dress and in his people skills; two of the more important skills both of those professions rely upon.   This man, who has 9 CDs released is one of the better story tellers you will hear, and at his shows you get two for the price of one; a story teller who can really spin the tales and a singer/songwriter who writes songs that are extensions of his tales put to music.  You get an extremely observant commentator who has a razor sharp wit and sense of the absurdity of life, a comedian, a singer and a story teller; what more could you ask for rolled into a single admission ticket?  Aside from that you just might be saved in his Church of The Pimps and Preachers, I am a convert, and it sure makes my Sundays more pleasant.

This singer who once faced Roberto Duran in a prizefight (he was a ranked boxer) has songs that deliver that same powerful punch that his fists can deliver, and with the same accuracy and power of his fists.  The songs are autobiographical bits and pieces and recount his life story as he was settling into his opportunities that arose from his observational skills.  He knows his songs oft times seem to have dark sides, however it is only by recognizing those facets and embracing them that they come to mean something.  These seeming “mistakes” are where the life lessons are learned.  The band with him here is tight and gives him the space he needs for his music.  Just to add a little more the man is an accomplished artist, he did the great cover art of this disc.  The street scenes, with his father the Preacher, his uncle the Pimp, and himself the small kid.  If you value original and authentic music that bears the stamp of truth, don’t pass it up, but rather go grab a copy for yourself and for a friend; you are guaranteed thanks for this.
