When you see the name Lloyd Maines (Terry Allen, Terri Hendrix, Robert Earl Keen, The Dixie Chicks etc.) as the Producer, you stop and listen. When he tells you give a listen to a very intelligent songwriter, and one of the nicest people he has met, you take notice. This is a disc that right from the first notes lets you know that the heads up from Lloyd wasn’t even necessary. This is the third album that Maines has produced for Temple and the disc is aptly named, as with all those miles and the experiences he gained under his belt, this new collection of songs reflects what has been gained in this songwriter’s growth and journey through life. The best way to gentle a horse is a lot of soaked saddle blankets that come from the miles and time spent with them, and maybe the best experience for a songwriter is a lot of miles. His songs come from his experiences in the living of his life; songs such as, Red Wine and Tequila, tell the results of a real life experience of mixing the two, as, You Don’t Have to Be Lonely, is about not setting on your butt and taking it but doing something.
His supporting cast here is very strong; of course Lloyd Maines is on Pedal Steel, Acoustic, Baritone, Electric, and Bass Guitar as well as Dobro and Mandolin; David Grissom Electric Guitar; Glenn Fukunaga, Bass; Dave Sanger, Drums and Percussion; Terri Hendrix, Bob Livingston and Gordy Quist on Harmony Vocals. The music runs from the Texas hill country’s version of Country Music, which means there is a strong infusion of Rock Sensibility, and it is well played and the songs are intelligent and well written. Look for this guy down the road this is a big step forward and for someone who has taken their time to gather their horses in good team.
