This second effort by these three mesmerizing women is a masterpiece of Victorian silk and lace, hide and seek, filled with willful wordplay and seductive harmonies. There is almost the feeling as you are laying back and listening that a spell has been cast upon you and you are transported to other softer more gently and sensual realms. This group is comprised of Ruth Ungar Merenda, founding member of the indie stringband Ruth & The Mammals; Aoife O’Donovan, of alternative bluegrass group Crooked Still; and Kristin Andreassen, of the stringband Uncle Earl. These ladies are all respected leaders of their bands and are all accomplished singers and multi-instrumentalists, Ruthie guitar, floor tom, fiddle, drums, acoustic and electric guitars, ukulele, piano, egg beater, and pan flute; Aoife Wurlitzer, electric and acoustic guitars, Hammond B-3, glockenspiel, harmonica, baritone ukulele, and recorder; and Kristin tambourine, high hat, snare, glockenspiel, electric and acoustic guitars, Rhodes, harmonica, Wurlitzer, piano and toy piano. The only other person on the disc is Michael Merenda, Ruthie’s husband, who plays tambourine and boingy toy thingy. Nine of the songs they chose for this disc were written by one of the members of the group, each wrote 3 songs, and the 10th song was, ‘Joey,’ written by Johnette Napolitano.

That these are 3 very astute modern women, who are self aware, and nimble of mind, and playful, any doubts listen to the first song “Aphrodisiaholic,” which tells of a woman having her way, with the man she is taking home. The woman who wrote the songs sings the lead, except on “Joey,” where all three trade vocals, and it is the beautiful blended vocal harmonies that add so much to the songs. There is a collective that genuinely enjoys the company of the others and knows that it is to their benefit that they continue to make music together. One of the most beautiful, sensual, and at times passionate discs to grace the disc player in a long time, don’t let this one slip by.
