This is the second disc from this Mexican born, Texas raised songwriter, who this time around partnered up with some of Nashville’s finest to finish up writing these songs: people such as his Producer R.S. Field, Will Kimbrough, and Kim Richey. They remain the stories of the lives behind the people who literature is written about, but who don’t read what is written about them. The truth seekers, and drifters who have to drift to maintain, the artists who have to create however don’t care about the selling of their work. He moves more to a roots rock stance with electric guitars on this disc without losing the more acoustic tinged feel of “Watertown’ behind and not losing any of the strength or sensitivity of his songs. He has enlisted companions to flesh out this disc with the security of their strength as musicians to go with his feel here; people such as Kenny Vaughan, Will Kimbrough, David Grissom
and Richard Bennett. His soft-spoken tenor voice remains a constant from the first one that contributes to a feel that permeates this disc that almost runs contrary to the electricity of the guitars and drums. There is a chaotic factor in life that he recognizes and incorporates into his songs without them feeling disjointed or incomprehensible, they don’t necessarily move in a linear fashion, however the story lines are clear and focused. The songs are broader in scope and the music more adventurously daring exposing more of the song/portrait to view. A great leap forward with hints to what the future may contain.
