These are songs of an observer of the goings on that are happening, and have happened, on this planet earth, and particularly in these United States. An observer who has fears and worries about his future and what it will be like if things continue as they are going, let alone the future his children and future generations will face. He is a writer/singer of topical songs in the mold of Woody Gutherie, the early Bob Dylan and Phil Ochs. He is an accurate observer and his songs are supported by the actual accounts of events. He also wrote one of the most poignant true-life songs about the life and relationship between two of the most charismatic of the topical songwriters, Woody Gutherie and Ramblin’ Jack Elliot. He doesn’t sugarcoat the tale and just lets it spin out as it did in it’s own time. Some of the subjects of his songs range from aging (something we all have to come to grips with sooner or later) and memories we have stored, war, low pay, and a forbidden herb that can be helpful. He has that weary voice that adds another dimension to the songs he is singing. It’s tone and huskiness makes it act as another instrument in his arsenal.
He has enlisted here a very solid group of his local Woodstock fellow musicians to support the songs and bring them to the forefront. Jim Weider handles the production chores, and also contributes his skill on guitars (electric, acoustic, dobro, etc.). Meg Johnson provides a perfect background vocal for Tom to run his voice against, listen to them together on “Frieda’s Secret Garden”, as they poke their fun at the harmful foolishness of authority figures. A new solid set of well-crafted songs from this under-recognized writer of songs that have been recorded by the likes of The Band and The Starship.
