This is an excellent debut disc for this young roots rocker. He is a well seasoned performer who has toured with bluesmen Lazy Lester and James Harman before going out on the road with his own band. His roots are primarily in the blues and that is the musical base from which he springs. He has evidently been hanging around the Austin, Texas scene because there are elements of country and rock incorporated into his music. He has written, or co-written 10 of the 11 songs on this disc and they constitute a very strong effort. This disc is beautifully paced particularly for a debut offering. There are a variety of tempos and he shows off his talents to be wide ranging and mature for such a young performer. Probably a big nod there to Producer Bo Ramsey for that. He has a more than adequate voice that has a slight raspyness to it. Whether he is belting it out on tunes such as BULLET FROM A GUN or RUN DOWN SHACKS, or pleading to his love on the beautiful ballad ONE MORE NIGHT, he matches the voice to the mood he wants in the song in a special way that enhances. The band is tight and sticks to him no matter what direction he decides to take. Though this is a studio disc the music is played with the same drive and energy as his live show. But of course you don't have the visuals which do enlarge the musical experience. Lazy Lester helps with a vocal duet on A WORD ABOUT A WOMAN and you can see where he was influential on Teddy's singing style. Though I am coming to it last his guitar playing is standout. He comes from the blues but his guitar rings true in whatever style he is playing. He has an energetic and solid sound that adds a great depth to the music. This is one fine disc and I look forward to much more from Teddy Morgan and the Pistolas in the future.
