Listening to the rhythms and infectious tom-tom beat sound of LOCK YOU UP, you only hope the band will be able to sustain this energy throughout the disc. Listen on and you will be rewarded with some very fine swing music that capture all the energy of the first purveyors of this sound. Swing is all the new rage in musical sound replacing whatever that replaced what was occupying the fort before that. This is a band that shows a real gift for capturing the sounds and riffs of the "Swing Era" and playing it with a genuine love and feeling. Since there is no bio material on the band, I am surmising that these players were making their living in other types of bands and playing together as the Love Dogs for the sheer love and fun it provided. Then low and behold they were able to quit the "waiting on tables" bands and play what they loved when the world finally caught up to them. Pure speculation on my part, but ..... These players have the sounds, the phrasing, and the licks down, and they are far too young to have gotten these first hand, so it must be through listening and playing that music that they love. Not only do they have the feeling for the music but they play it with an infectious joy that comes shining through - Listen to the joy percolating through on TOO OLD TO DIE YOUNG, one of my favorites on this disc. Then there is the wonderful recreation they do on the Chuck Willis penned, WRONG LAKE TO CATCH A FISH. You can almost hear the inflections of that era in the voice of E. Duato Scheer. He is not only credited with the lead vocals, but plays percussion and washboard, and either wrote or co-wrote 6 of the 14, if you count NOBODY'S DOG (part 2) as a song, songs on the disc. The seamless blending covers and originals, means that they did a stellar job with their writing if you have to keep referring to the jacket to see who wrote the songs. I get a feeling that their live shows are some kind of joy filled energetic shows that are a pleasure for all concerned. They are a dance band that will not let you down if this disc is anything to judge by. Not only that but I love their sense of humor.
