This is an excursion into the swamp lands of Louisiana, through the Cajun and Zydeco music indigenous to the area. It is for most of the disc a very pleasant and joyous journey. Richard LeBouef and Two Step do not define any new territory, nor do they add anything new to Cajun or Zydeco Music, but they sure do show up and give you your money's worth. They take the two distinct styles of music and merge them, blend them so pretty soon you can't distinguish which style of music they are playing. That has its good and bad points, depending on your point of view, I prefer to call this hybrid style swamp rock. Don't get me wrong unless you are a serious purist or a musicologist there is absolutely no lessening of the music by combining the two styles. There is a great joy of playing that comes through on this disc, and this is the whole point of this music. It is the music of the gatherings and dances to celebrate another day of life completed and safely tucked away. A time to get out and kick up the heels in the company of one's good friends. Listen to J'ETAIS AU BAL, or BAYOU NOIR/BACK O' TOWN, and see if you can keep your butt from moving in time with the infectious rhythms that come pouring out of the speakers. This is great music for the late night drive home when you want to make sure you are awake and alert. A question I have with this disc is why did he do the Bob Dylan song, ON A NIGHT LIKE THIS? This particular song just stands out like a sore thumb here, not because it is a Dylan song, but for the treatment it gets. They do a good job of interpretation on Clifton Chenier's, I'M COMING HOME. Doing it in much more of a Chicago blues style than I've heard it done before. A good infectious frolic through the swamplands of Louisiana.
