This is one of the most peaceful and startling albums I have run across. It truly paints a visual picture that seems to open up the mind. This disc, when the concept is thought about, is the most natural of pairings I could imagine. Paul Horn, one of the leading proponents of solo improvisational flute, playing with Southwestern Native American flute player, R. Carlos Nakai, inside one of the most beautiful canyons of the southwest. As with some of Paul Horn's earlier "Inside" albums this is a field recording, where the place becomes the third party on this disc. This disc was done in 2 weeks inside of Canyon De Chelly, using that beautiful canyons natural acoustics to capture the sounding of these two players. Listen to RAVEN RENDEZVOUS, where Paul Horn uses his soprano saxophone to 'speak to' a raven that happened into the area. The sound of R. Carlos Nakai's Native American flute, echoing the natural sounds of the canyon and its water is breathtaking on WITHIN THE ROCKS. The two of them toss ideas back and forth at times, trying out different tonalities, or embellishing the imaginings one or the other has put forth. Please don't think this is a Paul Horn disc with R. Carlos Nakai along to help, it is a genuine equal pairing of the two. In fact it is more than a pairing of two superlative solo flute players, it is a pairing of two souls in consonance. The duets the two of them play are simply breathtaking. This disc must not be missed.
