This well seasoned band out of Jacksonville, Fl has this new disc to add to their ever-expanding catalogue.  All of the songs, which are a blend of Southern Rock, Blues, Soul, Country Soul, and R&B, were written by JJ Grey except for Beautiful World which was written by Grey, Chuck Prophet and Angelo Petraglia (Kings of Leon).  This is an interesting disc because of the amount of ground it covers; Grey’s voice seems to be at its most expressive when the songs are the quieter or more acoustic realms.  His voice becomes more emotive and seems to take on a much more soulful tone than when it is a more raucous song, and that makes the song seems to work a lot better.  In the same way a song like All, is just another loud song while King Hummingbird, the emotion expressed by his voice causes the listener to truly listen to the song and the feeling in the song intrinsically becomes more rooted in the listener’s emotions.  It can make a big difference in a song succeeding or failing to capture the listener’s attention, and that is essential in a story telling singer/songwriter’s career. 
 
The band is tight and goes where he leads them.  There are some very effectively used horns on Gotta Know.  He has two guests and both play a big part in the success of this disc. Toots Hibbert sings with Grey on The Sweetest Thing, and Derek Trucks contributes some of his usually very tasty slide guitar on Lullaby.  This last song ends the disc on a very atmospheric note and is a very fitting end to the disc. His songs are being used more and more on television and in movie scores, and by doing this bringing his songs to a wider audience.  Be interesting to see what evolves here.
