This Detroit area guitarist grew up with the sounds of Prince and the 80’s rock guitarists as his first influences, then discovered the blues through Albert King, B.B. King, Stevie Ray Vaughn, and Jimi Hendrix and all of these influences can be heard easily on this disc. He assimilated his influences and transformed them into a David Gerald sound, which is a ferocious sounding Blues music that leans heavily on Rock and R & B. He started playing when he was 16 and felt the drawn to play music so much so that though he was poor and couldn’t afford a guitar, he would piece his neighbor’s scrap guitars, that were donated to the budding musician, piece them together to build various bastard “Frankenstein” guitars. You got to do what you got to do I guess, but his persistence paid off.
This disc is his debut and includes five original songs and five covers, and he does something novel with these songs. The cover versions of songs he pulled from his live shows, the originals he cut in the studio. (Just
for the record I couldn’t find any other musician credits, but in the studio he could have over dubbed all the parts) As to the live cuts he is a good guitarist that has a firm grip on the wah-wah pedal, and uses it to great advantage and affect. He doesn’t just imitate whoever made the song famous but adds a good bit of David Gerald to each of the cuts. His originals are good but nothing truly stands out with them, but they are not just throwaways either. There is promise and plenty of room for growth but a couple of them show great potential. This is someone to keep an eye on and see what he produces in the future, as there is good material to develop here.
