Right from the first notes you know this is a John Fogerty disc that harks back to the apogee of Creedence Clearwater Revival in every sense, and knowing John Fogerty, it is going to be as focused in today’s world as his discs were in the time back then. There is even a song on here titled “Creedence Song”, that takes us back thru the years and is perhaps a first mention of that band he used to play with that caused so much anger and disappointment with the record business for so long. This is truly a revival of that passion and sound that was all over the airwaves and creating such a stir in those years of CCR. It is truly a return to that blend of swampy pop stomp he was known for. The sound that is instantly recognizable and yet always seemed to contain some new twists and turns for the aural pleasures that abound on his discs. It is old and new, centered and right there at the edge all at the same time.
He has a band here that has captured the sound and nails the music solidly with its adherence to the beat (Kenny Aronoff - drums and percussion; David Santos bass), which leaves him free to sing the songs that are topically anti-war, “Long Dark Night” and “I Can’t Take It No More”, the divisions between those that have and those without, “Don’t You Wish It Was True”, and the hope that springs eternal. There are also the references to the eternal search for love and hope in this world. This is no rerun or retread of old music, it is as fresh today as it was back then, Fogerty has found the wellspring to eternal joyous rock and roll.
