This 25 year-old Atlanta native came with the brand of a guitar-slinger all over him, but to his credit this is not an blatantly guitar driven disc. He lets the music take center stage, and with 7 originals, and the other songs by such tunesmiths as Al Green, Johnny “Guitar” Watson and Bob Dylan, he lets the songs drive the disc. His voice sounds like it has been put through a paper shredder, but at this point it is not worldly strong enough to carry all of the material, particularly the blues tunes he is doing. Except he does do a beautiful job here, along with Ollabelle, on
Dylan’s “Simple Twist of Fate.” He uses the members of Ollabelle on a couple of tracks and they seem to be the strongest ones on the disc. The guitar playing is tasty and this is someone I would keep a sharp eye on as he matures and his voice carries more of what his eyes have seen.
