This time out the Vassar Clements has chosen to throw us a big old change of pace and do a disc of country blues. This fiddler is known for putting so much soul into the bluegrass and folk music that he is known for, decided to do a blues disc. To that end he has teamed up with producers David Grisman and Norton Buffalo to release this extraordinary country blues disc. They use an exceptional cast of blues musicians including Elvin Bishop, Maria Muldaur, Charlie Musselwhite, and Bob Brozman, to name a few of the stalwart musicians that make contributions. This is a solid disc with nary a weak tune on it. They take a handful of standards by people such as Skip James and Robert Johnson, and mix them with songs penned by,
among others Elvin Bishop and Norton Buffalo to come up with an excellent mix of traditional old and modern country blues. This has the feel of folks just sitting around and playing for the fun of it and enjoying making good music. Throughout the disc though Vassar shines he leaves plenty of room for the others to step out and play. A highlight is “Keep Your Lamp Trimmed and Burning.”
