Here we have a very solid example of work done by the Berklee College of Music in Boston, Susan Cattaneo was a student there on a vocal scholarship, and a couple of years after graduating, and raising a couple of kids, she was asked to return and teach. She has a voice that can be a powerhouse when she commands and is also capable of dropping down to get at subtle nuance. She grew up in New Jersey with all the Rock N’Roll that has come from there; but is also greatly influenced by Nashville and the country-side of life. Her first disc, Bold and Wild, reflects the Rock side and this disc displays the country/Nashville influence.
She is accompanied here by a plethora of Nashville’s session players. Names that are well known in the country circles of Nashville, such as; Jeff King and Pat Buchanan; she also has members of her Boston band that features Fairport Convention’s Dave Mattacks on drums. There are 12 songs here and she co-wrote 8 of them with a variety of people however Scarlet Keys’ name appears on 6 of the cuts, and the other co writers are one here and one there. Four of the songs are credited to only Ms Cattaneo. Most of them are potential hits for someone and I seem to remember hearing “Girls Night Out” on the radio, however since I am not a big radio listener I don’t know whether it was Ms Cattaneo’s version or not. It is quite a catchy song. The songs are a fair cut above good and the voice is outstanding, but it is hard to separate these versions from the rest of the music coming out of Nashville at this time, however the songwriting is the strong side of this woman’s work.
