This "new" roots driven approach is a pleasant new shift for the Bluerunners. They seem to be keeping away from the rock'n'roll of their earlier discs and the music slides easily into overlying circles of Cajun, Zydeco, rock and folk music. They expand the boundaries of each distinctive type of music until there are no boundaries. This is definitely a Southern Louisiana band playing music from their region, while at the same time adding new territory onto that region. This is also a more acoustic driven extended set, 71 plus minutes, than anything they have done, and it shows off the band in very fine form. This is a band I would love to have play at a dance because the tonations and beats vary; yet for all the variations they hold together. There are burn down the barn Cajun rockers such as DOORWAY, which they dovetail very nicely with the quieter, and more refined work on OSSUN TWO-STEP, the only traditional tune on the disc.
This disc is made stronger by the very fine song writing, 14 of the 15 songs are written by one or more members of the group. The tunes show off a wide-ranging interest in music that also stands together as one fine set of music. The band draws on a strong instrumental background with a great variety of instrumental textures using both traditional instruments, fiddle and accordion, in conjunction with electric guitars and saxophones. I very much like the directions this band is heading in and look forward to their next release.Songs, times, and writers
