There is a smooth and serene quality to the music of Big Sandy and his Fly-Rite Boys no matter what the tempo of the song. Their music is a mix of rockabilly, western swing, and that elusive hillbilly boogie sound that comes from crossing the two genres together. The focus on this disc is the vocal harmonies in the group, and here Big Sandy has a new partner to bounce off in Jeff West who is now playing upright bass with the boys. Though the sound is so easy and flowing there is a dark side to many of the lyrics that are coming across here, as evidence listen to the music that flows so smoothly on “When Sleep Won’t Come”, then take a long listen to the thoughts the words express. We have all experienced that breed of night, and the ever-invading thoughts that seem to run rampant, circling upon themselves ever ending. A lot of the mood is established by the excellent and tight playing of the band. Lee Jeffriess does a particularly stellar job on the steel guitar. Give a listen to the mood evoked on “In the Steel of the Night”. This is a wonderful disc for dancing away those long summer nights. So sit back and relax and enjoy.
