This is arguably Tab Benoit’s most complete, consistent, and powerful disc to be put out in a long time. For this disc he has fused his passion for the environment with his art, songwriting, and that may well be where the power of this disc has come from. Seven of the eleven songs he co-wrote with Anders Osborne. Just to set the record Anders Osborne and Tab are friends, both renown for their guitar wizardry, songwriting, and their love of Louisiana culture. Benoit comes by it naturally through his Cajun heritage and Osborne, born in Sweden settled in New Orleans in ’85, so he is there by choice. These duos, who are partners in Voice of Wetlands, an organization focused on driving awareness and developing educational outlets/programs about the loss of the wetlands in southern Louisiana (http://www.voiceofthewetlands.org/home), also co-produced this disc.
This disc is a wonderful vehicle for a band that is tougher than almost any other that Benoit has recorded with. Anders plays most of the rhythm guitar; and Tab also has keyboardist Ivan Neville, who has played with his father, Aaron’s, band, the Neville Brothers as well as Keith Richard’s X-Pensive Winos; Brady Blade on drums, think Emmy Lou Harris and Steve Earle; Corey Duplechin who has handled bass in Tab’s band and Chubby Carrier; and joined by Michael Doucet, BeauSoleil, on fiddle and vocals for 3 cuts. Tab Benoit’s guitar has never been more furious and he handles it so no prisoner’s are taken, though on the slower numbers restraint and delicate touch are what are served up. This is a disc where all the pieces came together at the correct time and it shows that magic can still explode into the music; the songwriting, playing, and passion about who they are and what they are putting forth is overpowering.
