band of heathens

This is one of the bands that truly defines the music genre called “Americana,” and hails back in the best of ways to the music of The Band and its eclectic roots.  There are 3 front men, Colin Brooks, Ed Jurdi and Gordy Quist, who also handle the lead vocals and songwriting duties.  There is Seth Whitney the bass player vocalist, who has been with them from the start and John Chipman, the drummer and also a vocalist who joined in 2009 when the touring schedule got heavier.  The three front men handle the main load of the songwriting responsibilities, however they are quick to point out that songs often get all cock-amamied about when the band gets a hold of them.   This group is the epitome of the diversity of music that comes to us from all sources and they distill it down to heady mixture of tunes that is the essence of Americana.

There is a feel to this band that this music is a genuine expression of what and who they are; at times it rocks and rolls, other times it is more reflective, sometimes it is just way down in the swamps dirty.  A very intriguing disc as it covers a wide range of music and yet it never looses the focus and intensity that is necessary to put the music across to the listener.  This is a rare quality and in this aspect also they also bring to the mind of the listener The Band.  Comparisons to this legendary group are not a back handed compliment, nor do the infer that they are a lesser quality, as The Band was one of the first to bring together the many disparate elements of the diversity of American Music to an organic whole. The BoH grow with each disc into something that becomes more tangible and substantial, and at the same time ties in diverse new elements.
